This location is facing a growing urbanization following the worsening of the climate. Today, most districts in the town are settled in low areas liable to flooding. A large population lives in those districts and many socio-economic facilities, some of which are vital to the development of the country, are built there. The climate change impacts will be important in this context through flooding caused by the sea encroachments as well as the heavy precipitations and the rise of the groundwater top related to those occurrences and the sea level rise. The activities that are planned  for this component are the following:

  • Assess the breaches in the sand dune cordon
  • Carry out technical feasibility studies of regeneration of fragile coastal ecosystems
  • Carry out technical feasibility studies of closing the breaches and vegetating the sand dune cordon
  • Close the breaches by appropriate material and techniques
  • Stabilize and vegetate the sand dune cordon

At site level, 50 ha of littoral dunes have been restored and biologically fixed. 25 000 seeds have been produced in the seeds nurseries (10000 have been given to the project for the protection of Nouakchott). 4 students from the University of Nouakchott have been involved in the project through a convention. The site has attracted numerous visits and activities, especially during the tree day. Communication tools have been prepared.

At national level (component 2), the project contributed to the following activities : « caravane du littoral » of parliamentarians and local decision makers which was held in Ndiago, in the PNBA and in Nouadhibou ; study on the integration of CC in the management plan of the PNBA, formation and sensitisation of scholars, participation to the creation of the national stakeholders network on adaptation to CC and also to conferences on CC organized at the University of Nouakchott. Before the end of the year, the project will support the validation process for the integration of CC into the littoral law as well as the coordination mechanism between institutions working on CC.
